I have known Nancy Kerry for 12 years on a professional and personal level. While on the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce Board, Nancy was working for the Chamber as VP of Public Affairs. She was instrumental in securing funding for various tourist and community wide activities and strengthening the Chamber’s relationship with local government agencies. Her professional and collaborative traits were critical to this position.
Once Nancy took the position of City Manager for the City of South Lake Tahoe, I was able to see several additional traits that are important for managing a complex community such as South Lake Tahoe. Nancy inherited a City budget that was in disarray and staff morale at an all-time low. In a very short time her leadership skills enabled her to gain the support and enthusiasm of staff and stabilized the budget with some difficult yet effective negotiations with pension and retirement plans. With things under control, Nancy used her visionary relationship building skills to improve the quality of life for the residents of South Lake Tahoe through a wide range of planning and collaborative projects throughout the area. She was instrumental as lead negotiator to acquire and redevelop a centrally located old hotel that is now a transformative multi-store commercial site currently under construction in the center of town. She led community engagement efforts such as “one south shore” and “shared vision” concepts to encourage a more collaborative approach to economic development. The efforts resulted in substantial public and private capital community investment.
On a personal level, I have always found Nancy to be enjoyable to be around. Her high energetic, positive attitude followed her whether it was a small gathering of friends, a fund raiser for a local organization or watching a little league baseball game.
